Getting Started
Is Formation Fantasy free?
Yes. There are no purchases, subscriptions or paid features in the app.
Where can I get the app?
Formation Fantasy runs in your browser at app.formationfantasy.com. The iOS and Android apps aren’t in the App Store or Google Play yet.
How do I create an account?
Sign up with an email address and password, or continue with Google, Apple or Facebook. If you forget your password, tap Forgot Password? on the login screen to get a reset email.
Which leagues can I play fantasy with?
Fantasy leagues use MLS players and matches. The match centre (scores, tables, lineups and stats) also covers many other competitions around the world.
Leagues
How do I create a league?
Open the Fantasy tab
Tap Create League.
Choose your settings
Enter a name and optional description, pick the number of teams (4, 6, 8, 10 or 12), and choose whether the league is private.
Invite your friends
Open the league, tap ⋯ → Invite, and share the invite code.
How do I join a league?
Get the invite code from the league’s commissioner, then go to the Fantasy tab, tap Join League and enter the code. You can only join while the league has room.
How many managers can be in a league?
Between 2 and 12. You choose 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 when you create the league, and the commissioner can change the limit to anything from 2 to 12 later, as long as it isn’t below the number of managers already in it.
Can I be in more than one league?
Yes. Each league is separate, with its own draft, squad, lineups and standings.
What does the commissioner control?
The league owner and any admins can change the league’s name and description, team limit, privacy, squad size, draft settings, lineup slots, matchup schedule, and waiver and trade settings. They can also reorder the waiver order and veto accepted trades.
The Draft
How does the draft work?
It’s a live draft where managers take turns picking MLS players. By default it’s a snake draft, where the order reverses each round. Commissioners can choose a linear draft instead. Each pick has a timer (30 seconds by default).
What happens if I miss my pick?
If you’re in the draft room and have players in your queue, the app drafts the first one for you when your clock runs out. Otherwise the draft waits for you to pick. Nothing picks automatically for managers who aren’t in the room.
How many players are in a squad?
16 by default. Commissioners can set the squad size anywhere from 16 to 24.
Lineups & Scoring
When do lineups lock?
At the first kickoff of each matchweek. From then on, you can’t change your starters for that matchweek, even for players whose games are later in the round.
What if I forget to set my lineup?
Your previous lineup carries over. If you’ve never set one, a lineup is built from your roster for you.
Do bench players score? Are there auto-substitutions?
No to both. Only your 11 starters count toward your matchup score, and there are no automatic substitutions. A starter who doesn’t play scores 0, so check your lineup before the matchweek locks.
Is there a captain?
No. There’s no captain or vice-captain, and every starter’s points count once.
How are points calculated?
Players earn points for goals, assists, clean sheets, saves, defensive work, chances created and more, plus bonus points for the three best-rated players in each match. Defenders’ totals are multiplied by 1.25. See the full Scoring System.
Why did my player’s points change after the match?
While a match is live, some points are provisional: a clean sheet can be lost, and bonus ranks can change until the final whistle. Our data provider also occasionally corrects stats in the hour or so after full time.
My player’s club plays twice this matchweek. Do both games count?
Yes. Points from every MLS match a starter plays in that matchweek are added together.
Can I change the scoring rules for my league?
Not yet. Every league currently uses the Standard scoring rules.
Standings
How do standings work?
Each matchweek you play one opponent. A win earns 3 league points, a draw (exactly equal scores) earns 1, and a loss earns 0. Ties in the table are broken by total fantasy points scored.
Who do I play each week?
The commissioner generates a round-robin schedule, so you play every other manager in turn. With an odd number of managers, one manager has a bye each matchweek.
Waivers, Free Agents & Trades
When can I add players?
After your league’s draft is complete. From each matchweek’s processing run (by default 1 day before its first kickoff) until that kickoff, unrostered players are free agents you can add instantly. From kickoff until the next processing run, every add is a waiver claim.
How are waiver claims decided?
By rolling priority. The highest-priority manager with a valid claim gets their top claim, then moves to the back of the order. The starting order is the reverse of the draft order, and commissioners can reorder it.
When do trades happen?
Once both managers agree, a trade is completed at the next processing run, before waiver claims. The commissioner can veto an accepted trade until then. Trades can include 1 to 5 players per side.
Why can’t I pick up a player I just saw dropped?
Dropped players stay on waivers for at least 24 hours, so they can only be claimed, not added instantly, until that time has passed and a processing run has happened.
Notifications
What notifications can I get?
Match alerts for the teams and leagues you follow, and new messages in your league chats. Choose what you get in Settings → Notification settings. You can also mute one league’s chat from the bell in that chat.
Account
How do I reset my password?
- On the login screen, tap Forgot Password?
- Enter your email address
- Open the reset link in the email we send you and choose a new password
If the email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder.
Can I use Formation Fantasy on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in with the same account and your leagues, clubs and followed teams and leagues come with you. App preferences such as theme and language are saved on each device.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile, tap the ⚙️ settings icon, then Account → Delete Account. This deletes your account along with your profile, follows, fantasy clubs and league data. See Delete Your Data for exactly what gets deleted and what happens to your leagues.
